A story behind
Morocco became my first adventure after settling in Zurich.
I first found a charming riad in Marrakesh, run by a friendly Italian lady from Rimini. The heart of the city (Medina) unfolded in two different scenes—the ‘exposed’ one is like an open-air theater filled with small shops, markets of any kind, street vendors, and local restaurants, and the hidden one, hidden behind riad walls, in gardens, and secret small squares in between small alleys.
From Essaouira, a coastal town alive with a bustling fish market surrounded by cats, seagulls, and a variety of fish, to the incredible shores of Imsouane—an absolute haven for surfers with its hidden beach known as 'magic beach.' Here, waves break with remarkable precision and length, providing an exhilarating experience that feels like a five-minute ride if you can master the longboard.
In the early morning, the perfect time for these waves, I felt a unique sensation while surfing through dense fog. The departure of fishing boats and the resonant calls of the mosques filled the entire bay. Sitting on a bench above, I could sense the gaze of elderly women from the village observing us surfers, perhaps marveling at the discovery that the ocean could bring joy, not just serve as a resource.
Between one place and another, I drove through lonely, almost desert-like landscapes. Along the way, you can encounters with a seller of wooden camels and someone selling small aromatic plants. I got stopped by the police for driving too fast. They tried to negotiate the fine, offering me to give a ride to the school teacher from the village to his house. Other times, I'd be 'robbed' by a kid who, just to get money for his 'self-managed' parking, would act like he got hit by the car.
